World Sepsis Day is marked annually on September 13th. Numerous events globally raise the awareness of sepsis not only to health professionals but to communities, including patients and their families who have been impacted by sepsis. According to the Global Sepsis Alliance, there are 47-50 million cases of sepsis per year, with at least 11 million deaths per year. It has been described that 1 in 5 deaths worldwide is associated with sepsis, and up to 50% of sepsis survivors suffer from long-term physical or psychological limitations. Sepsis is the number one cause of death in hospitals and the foremost cause of hospital readmissions.
We at the ISID agree that stopping sepsis saves lives! Our educational offerings, including our journals, the Guide to Infection Control in Health Settings, and webinars on sepsis on the Knowledge Exchange platform, attest to the importance accorded by the ISID to the prevention, control, and management of sepsis.
The ISID’s Guide to Infection Control in the Healthcare Setting is an exceptionally valuable resource, bringing together the most up-to-date principles and interventions. Reducing the rate of infection and the impact of associated consequences for patients, their families, and healthcare systems is crucial. Implementing these measures can prevent longer hospital stays, reduce long-term disability, curb antimicrobial resistance, lower financial costs, and save lives. Your commitment to these strategies is vital in curbing sepsis for all.
