Dr. Larry Madoff to Step Down as ProMED Editor

On May 31, 2021, after nearly 20 years, Dr. Larry Madoff, is set to step down from his consultant role as ISID’s ProMED Editor. “As ISID navigates the ever-changing landscape of emerging infectious diseases, we look toward the future, but also acknowledge our past – especially contributions from Dr. Madoff, says Prof. Alison Holmes – ISID President. He has been a key part of ProMED’s development. The collective One-Health community thanks him!” Larry, Medical Director at the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences, Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has been contributing to the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. While at ISID, Larry has served as an advisor on numerous projects, committees and programs at ISID, advocating for colleagues and programs in lower-middle income countries (LMICs).

ISID’s CEO, Linda MacKinnon, says “I want to thank Larry for his dedication and years of service to ISID, and the public health community at large. From those far and wide, Larry is recognized for his valuable inputs in the innovative disease surveillance space”. ISID’s President-elect, Prof. Paul Tambyah remarked “we appreciate all that Larry has contributed to at the International Society for Infectious Diseases and ProMED building on the legacy of Dr. Woodall and the pioneers of this unique resource. We wish him well in all his future endeavors”. At ISID, our mission is to support health professionals, non-government organizations, and governments around the world in their work to stay ahead of, investigate, and manage infectious disease outbreaks. ISID has a particular focus in countries that have limited resources, and which disproportionately bear the burden of infectious diseases.

Founded in 1986 with an unwavering commitment to infectious disease practitioners, scientists, and public health professionals working in resource-limited settings, ISID organizes leading international Congresses, offers open-access infection control resources, and distributes grants to young investigators beginning their careers in the field of infectious diseases. Additionally, ISID operates the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID) and has organized infectious disease innovation marathons sparking novel solutions that address disease control challenges. Prof. Marc Mendelson, ISID’s most recent Past President stated “The Society will continue to need pioneers such as Dr. Madoff, and I am sincerely grateful for his immeasurable contributions. We look forward to those coming up through the ranks of ProMED to continue its legacy and deliver results as the top innovative disease surveillance leader for many more decades”.
