ISID is pleased to welcome two new moderators to the ProMED team. Kassim A. Jimale from Somalia and Mohamed Abdelrehman Mohamed from Somalia will both be working with the ProMED-EAFR network.
Kassim A. Jimale, M.Phil, B.S.
Mr. Kassim Abdi Jimale is an experienced senior public health practitioner currently serving as the Vice President of Research and Development for Jamhuriya University of Science and Technology (JUST) in Mogadishu. He is also a senior lecturer at the Somali National University (SNU), the only public higher education institution in Somalia.
Mr. Jimale was one of the three Incident Managers of the COVID-19 preparedness and response in Somalia and is a senior public health specialist and lecturer working in both the academic and health systems in a country with very limited resources over the past ten years. As a qualified Medical Microbiologist with a fast experience in the academic and public health sectors, Mr. Jimale also works with the clinical laboratory systems. Mr. Jimale has multiple TOT experience in the fields of Lecturing, Andragogy, Curriculum Development, Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM), Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR), Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), Antimicrobial Resistant/Use, Sphere project, Water Health and Sanitation (WASH), One Health Initiative (OH), Biorisk Management (BRM), Risk Assessment in Health (RA), Laboratory Quality Management System (LQMS), District Health Information Management II (DHIS2), Somali Health System Strategic Plan I & II (HSSP I & II), Essential Packages of Health Services (EPHS) and many others. He is also well-travelled, experienced working under extreme pressure, and a great team player.
One of his major achievements in the Somali public health sector is the reestablishment of the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) of Somalia after its destruction during the war in Somalia.
Mr. Jimale holds Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Medical Microbiology from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. He is passionate about public health services, research, academic teaching and training and sport.
Mohamed Abdelrehman Mohamed, DVM, MVSc.
Dr. Mohamed Abdelrahman Mohamed graduated with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUSTECH) in 2010 and holds a Master of Veterinary Public Heath (MVPH) from University Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Dr. Mohamed is a member of Somali Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) and Somali One Heath. He is interested in infectious diseases at the animal-human-food interface. His research area mainly focuses on the theme of animal infectious diseases particularly zoonoses and antimicrobial resistant.
He is a researcher and senior lecturer at Somali National University (SNU) in Mogadishu since 2016. He trains veterinary graduates on disease investigation methods including: preparing plans for field activities to investigate the reported disease outbreaks, leading the team of veterinarians to investigate reported disease outbreaks in collaboration with local community members, investigating and collecting samples for final diagnosis, and advising the authorities on what to do to limit the disease from spreading. In collaboration with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, he also submits and tests the samples for final diagnosis, prepares reports on the findings, and makes recommendations based on scientific findings.
Dr. Mohamed also has experience in Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Development, Laboratory Biosafety/ Biosecurity, One Health Initiative and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). His major contribution is the reestablishment of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and development of faculty veterinary curriculum after the collapse of Somali government due to civil war. He is team-oriented and interested in research, academic training, and playing football.
