Embracing Resilience and Hope: A New Year Message from CEO, Linda MacKinnon

As we step into the New Year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary resilience we’ve shown as a global community in the face of unprecedented challenges. From relentless Mpox and H5N1 Bird Flu outbreaks, to continued unforgiving frontline worker fatigue, along with catastrophic climate disasters, the past year has been a testament to the dedication, passion, and adaptability of each of you—our ISID Village Members, Emerging Leaders, Executive Committee and Council Members, key Partners, and thousands of One Health professionals worldwide. Together, we have continued the battle against infectious diseases, provided support to vulnerable populations, and innovated in ways that were once thought impossible.

While the road ahead seems more uncertain by the day, one thing is clear: we are stronger together. The collective knowledge, expertise, and compassion within ISID has never been more vital. In this New Year, we have the opportunity to build on our decades of progress, to harness the lessons learned, and to make new strides in our mission to protect global health and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Initiatives like ISID’s Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED), our family of International Journals on Infectious Diseases (IJID), the accredited Medical Continuing Educational platform/Knowledge Exchange, and of course, the landmark International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICIDs), are all pillars of the global infectious disease community. The world at large has made significant advances in vaccines, diagnostics, and treatment strategies, providing critical momentum and awareness about emerging diseases, but there is still much to be done. Every day presents a new opportunity for collaboration, innovation, and impact.

Let us also remember that the work we do day in & day out is about more than just science—it is about people—the lives we touch, the communities we serve, and the global future we are building. As we face the uncertainty ahead, let us embrace the challenges with a spirit of hope, determination, and community. As writer Richard Paul Evans said, “It is often in the darkest skies that we see the brightest stars,” so let’s approach each new challenge with the unwavering belief that, together, we can create a healthier, more equitable world. Equally important is to light the way for one another, especially when the path ahead may be filled with uncertainty. I am deeply proud of what we’ve accomplished and certain that our global infectious disease community will continue to meet future challenges with the same tenacity that has seen us through the past 5 years.

I wish you and your loved ones a Happy New Year—filled with health, hope, and the drive to continue making a difference.

Warmest regards,
