World Mosquito Day 2024

World Mosquito Day is observed yearly on August 20 to mark Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that the female anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria from person to person. Mosquitos kill more people globally than any other animal. The theme of the World Mosquito Day 2024 is “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world.” This theme is apt as low resource settings are disproportionately affected by malaria morbidity and mortality. In most malaria endemic countries, malaria is the leading cause of OutPatient visits, as well as work and school absenteeism. It is also a major cause of under five mortality. The theme of this year identifies the need for equity in access to much needed malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent complications from malaria.
