Each year, ProMED presents an award in honor of the anniversary of its founding in August 1994. We are pleased to announce the winner of this year's annual award.

For the second time in her illustrious career, Dr. Maria Jacobs, ProMED’s Senior Technical Editor, has won the annual ProMED Award for Excellence in Outbreak Reporting. Once again in 2022, ProMED team members were able to nominate their colleagues for the award, resulting in eight candidates. The team then voted for their top three choices. Maria last received the ProMED award in 2018, which shows the tremendous respect her ProMED colleagues have for her daily behind the scenes struggles to help make all of us better at what we do!

Maria has been with ProMED from the beginning, starting off as ISID’s first full time employee in 1988. She has held many roles and titles over the years, but has served as ProMED’s Senior Technical Editor since 2007 and currently leads the six-person team of Copy Editors. Moderators regularly credit Maria for guiding them on their posts, and relay how she is the keeper of the details – the common thread that keeps all of ProMED’s posts standardized. 

The person who nominated her wrote:

"[Maria] runs a wonderful editing team, ProMED cannot do without it. She knows exactly what to do, is always very courteous, helpful, and extremely reliable. She has been with us almost since we started. She is just there in the background and because of her everything runs smoothly. She deserves recognition."

Upon being informed of her win, Maria said, "I was happy to be nominated again but it is truly an honor that my colleagues have chosen to give me this award a 2nd time. ProMED has been an important part of my life for 15 years and I am glad to have contributed to its success."
