Linda C. MacKinnon, MPH, PMP
Linda is the Executive Director of ISID. She’s held multiple positions at ISID including Deputy Executive Director, Director of Emerging Disease Surveillance, and the Assistant Director of the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED). As a global health informatics professional with extensive leadership in programmatic development and infectious disease epidemiology, Linda is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Society. Prior to joining ISID, Linda worked to advance domestic and international electronic public health surveillance initiatives, including the response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. Linda has worked in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on broad initiatives to strengthen health information systems in low and middle income countries, including Swaziland, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Vietnam, and Ukraine. Linda also served as an epidemiologist at the CDC’s National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) where she led efforts to improve national active and passive surveillance systems, monitored outbreak detection algorithms, and supported the development of laboratory information and reporting systems. She is a true interdisciplinary public health professional, advocating for and connecting with infectious disease experts and field epidemiologists around the globe.
Linda is a former U.S. Peace Corps volunteer serving in Niger, West Africa, and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). She is completing her PhD in Epidemiology, holds a Master’s of Public Health in International Health from Emory University, and an undergraduate degree in Health Services Administration from Providence College, where she also studied in Salzburg, Austria.
Catherine C. Crowley
Director of Business Development
Catherine has worked in healthcare for over 20 years. She began her career as a pharmaceutical sales representative working for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals in the field calling on physicians and hospitalists in the Chicago area. Her passion for improving the lives of patients around the world led her to the American College of CHEST Physicians as the Senior Manager for Exhibits and Sponsorship Sales. There she worked with pharmaceutical and medical device companies to include disease states such as COPD, IPF, PAH and Lung Cancer as well as critical care medicine. In 2019 Catherine started in her current role as the current Director of Business Development at ISID. Her hope is to learn more about international and global health as well as expand her role in the public health arena.
IKEEP Senior Manager
Toni is dedicated to education: clinician, patient and community. At the American College of CHEST Physicians, she grew the educational portfolio by creating new lines of business which resulted in additional revenue streams for the Association. Her expertise in developing strong relationships with faculty, membership and academic medical centers insured that relevant disease state content was delivered at numerous sites throughout the US in an engaging, interactive fashion. She brings this skill set to the robust ISID learning platform, IKEEP.
Britta Lassmann, MD
Dr. Lassmann is an infectious diseases physician with a longstanding interest in global health. Since graduating from Medical School in Vienna, Austria she has trained and worked at Mayo Clinic, Yale University and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Her international work and drive to provide care to medically underserved patients brought her to Africa, Southeast Asia and South America.
Much of Britta’s interest focuses on international knowledge transfer and the global exchange and sharing of best medical practices through digital technology. She is drawn to data driven insights and the use of analytical methods to optimize population-based health outcomes. As the Program Director of the International Society for Infectious Diseases she is responsible for developing and overseeing the Society’s educational, scientific, and professional programs. She has received project development support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Elsevier Foundation, IBM, the US Agency for International Development and many others.
Taryn Silver Lorthe, MPH
Director of Marketing & Communications
Taryn Silver Lorthe is the Director of Marketing and Communications for ISID. She joined the ISID team in 2017. Before joining ISID Taryn spent over five years living and working in Haiti managing and directing small organizations focused on community health and nutrition. She also worked and lived in Israel and Kenya. Taryn has a Bachelor’s of Science in Health Sciences from Northeastern University and a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on International Health from Boston University. In her spare time Taryn enjoys practicing yoga and hiking with her husband, son, and two dogs.
Larry Madoff, MD
Dr. Larry Madoff is an infectious disease physician specializing in the epidemiology of emerging pathogens, bacterial pathogenesis, and international health. He is Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Lecturer on Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Madoff serves as Medical Director of the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Dr. Madoff has served as the Editor of the International Society for Infectious Diseases’ Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) since 2002. He is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, Massachusetts Medical Society, past President of the U.S. Lancefield Streptococcal Research Society, a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. A graduate of Yale College and Tufts Medical School, he performed his Internal Medicine Residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and his Infectious Disease Fellowship at the Harvard Medical School-Longwood program.
Marketing and Program Manager
Laurence is a marketing and program manager for ISID and a ProMED copy-editor. She has been working for ISID for 20 years. Laurence has had the opportunity to travel to many interesting places for the ICID's. She also manages ISID's Guide to Infection Control and research grant program, organizes governance meetings, and coordinates the scientific program for ISID's meetings, amongst other tasks. She is an avid photographer and tutors French in her spare time.
Marjorie Pollack, MD
ProMED Deputy Editor
Dr. Marjorie Pollack is the Deputy Editor of ProMED-mail, and resident Epidemiology and Surveillance ProMED Moderator. As a Consultant Medical Epidemiologist and long-standing leader within ProMED’s community of practice, Dr. Pollack is responsible for onboarding and mentoring new ProMED moderators around the globe as well as identifying new partners to help further ProMED-mail Regional network coverage. After completing an Internal Medicine Residency, Dr. Pollack trained at the United States (U.S.) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) and Preventive Medicine Residency.
Along with day-to-day ProMED projects and responsibilities, Dr. Pollack is often called upon to speak about innovative surveillance techniques and has supported various worldwide agencies such as: The CDC, Global 2000, US Agency for International Development (USAID), World Health Organization (WHO), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the European Economic Community (EEC), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the World Bank. Dr. Pollack has worked extensively in over 50 lower and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Western Pacific region. Dr. Pollack is credited with sending out the first Request for Information (RFI) identifying the COVID-19 cluster of undiagnosed pneumonia cases on 30 Dec 2019 and many other sentinel reports to thousands of ProMED readers.
John Ramatowski, MSc, MMSc
Assistant Program Director
John Ramatowski has served with ISID for five years and currently works as the Assistant Program Director. He obtained his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and Public Health from Tufts University in 2016 and a dual degree Master’s of Science in One Health and Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Royal Veterinary College in 2018. He has a second Master’s of Medical Sciences from Boston University School of Medicine. He has conducted research on antimicrobial resistance and treatment failure experiences within human and veterinary sectors in Uganda, infectious disease outbreaks related to the movement of displaced populations, and assessed HIV treatment and prevention programs in South Africa. Additionally, he has served as an emergency medical professional working with multiple agencies in the United States.
Doris Steinbach is the Conference Manager for the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID). She handles the operation and logistics for the International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICID) and International Meeting on Emerging Diseases and Surveillance (IMED). Doris has been involved with ISID for over 28 years.
Director of Finance
Angela is the Director of Finance and Operations and has been with ISID for 13 years. Angela supports many ongoing projects and is the lead for contract and financial management, federal compliance, and all aspects of ISID’s financial reporting. In her role, Angela also supports ISID headquarters staff, consultants, and partners around the globe, allowing ISID to respond to proposals and funding opportunities on a continual basis. Her busy season is around the times of International Congresses and large-scale meetings as ISID brings thousands of practitioners together.
For over 20 years, in addition to supporting ISID’s programs and projects, Angela provides accounting, taxation, and financial management consulting services to a diverse business and individual client base in the New England area. She is a member of a variety of Certified Public Accounting (CPA) organizations and is an authorized tax practitioner with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Despite living in Boston for many years, Angela is an enthusiast of the Green Bay Packers!
